From ZAR 63'650

To me, Botswana has a special appeal. It is a country where the adventurous spirit can still find real wilderness. This is where animals roam free and the municipal manager drives a Land Cruiser. Botswana has a low human population and a high density sand tracks. It is a safe and politically stable country and a joy to visit.

With the following highlights, it has to be on top of your bucket list:

  • Okavango Delta
  • Central Kalahari and Kgalagadi
  • Makgadikgadi Pans
  • Moremi, Savute and Chobe
  • Tuli Block

It is also just 80 km’s from the spectacular Victoria Falls (an optional day visit)

Wildlife and bird viewing is unparallaled. In an attempt to sustain the exclusivity of Botswana’s wild places, the government works on a low impact, high cost model for tourism. This means that there are not a lot of mid-range options available, but if you are willing to pay or willing to take the fun option of camping, you are in for a treat.

After a delicious breakfast, we bid the water paradise goodbye and head inland to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The road takes us along sandy tracks as we head deeper into this vast hinterland. The Kalahari Desert is a semi-desert area and the largest continuous stretch of sand in the world, spreading from South Africa to the Congo Basin.

We will spend three nights in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve at different campsites. Every day we will go on a morning and afternoon game drive. The beauty of the Kalahari lies in its grasslands, seasonal pans, vast herds of wildlife and dark-maned lions. This is truly a magical wilderness where we will experience the closeness of nature.

Our campsites have limited facilities but we will be fully self-sufficient.

Day 5 - MAUN, BOTSWANA:

Today we make our way back to Maun. We will game drive through the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, looking for more animals along the way.

Our accommodation for the evening is the wonderful Island Safari Lodge. Island Safari Lodge has been part of the landscape of Maun, Botswana since 1973, when it was founded by the legendary Tony Graham. Island Safari Lodge overlooks the Thamalakane River. The view from the lodge is without equal in Maun. Huge, shady trees are in abundance on the grounds and beyond, so birdwatchers can be sure of spotting a wide variety of bird species.

The look and feel of the lodge is rustic and the policy of the lodge is to train and employ locals rather than importing strangers so this gives us an opportunity to connect with the local people. The restaurant bar and swimming pool area is massive and gives visitors the privacy. We will have dinner in the restaurant. (own expense)

Day 6 - MAUN, BOTSWANA:

We have a very exciting day ahead today. We will take a full day boat trip into the majestic Okavango Delta.

We will depart early in the morning for a full day of viewing game, birds and some of Botswana’s most breathtaking scenery. This mesmerising adventure up the winding Okavango channels will be interspersed with pauses for your viewing pleasure. We can expect to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lechwes and buffalo to name a few. the birdlife is exceptional. Look out for Wattled Crane and majestic African Fish Eagles as we go. Birders may be especially interested to try and track down the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl after hearing its deep booming call. This trip is a classic example of the “journey being the destination”, the object is not to get anywhere in particular but to spend time in this untouched wilderness.

For lunch, we will have a picnic along the way while we enjoy this magical part of Botswana.

Where possible, depending on water levels you may use a different combination of channels on your way back.

We arrive back at the lodge in the late afternoon. We will have dinner at the restaurant again (own expense) and share stories of the day’s awesome experience. The Okavango Delta is the newest member of the World Heritage Site list and a natural paradise. This area of land and water is home to a high density of wildlife and birds.

Day 7 to Day 9 - CHIEF’S ISLAND, MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA:

This morning you have the option to do a scenic 45-min flight over the Delta. This is highly recommended as you get a great idea of the geography and topography of the Delta, and the views are spectacular.

After the flight, we will make our way to the Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango and includes the Moremi Tongue and chief’s island, boasting one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on the continent. This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major, naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered. Both Black and White Rhino have recently been re-introduced, now making the reserve a ‘Big Five’ destination.

We will spend 3-nights in this beautiful game reserve. We will camp during our stay in Moremi and we might move between different campsites.

While here we will take a morning and evening game drive every day.

You have the option to do a wonderful Mokoro Cruise on the Delta.

Day 10 - NXAI PAN:

After our three days in the Moremi Game Reserve, we head out of the Delta and on to the Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans. Our route takes us via Maun where we will stop and refresh before we drive further. The areas around the pans were once parts of a vast inland lake, but due to shifts in the earth’s crust the rivers feeding the lake changed direction and the lake subsequently dried up. It is now fed by seasonal rain, which attracts thousands of water birds and wildlife. Vegetation can’t grow on the salty surface of the pans, but on the fringes, grass thrives along with massive baobabs.

Nxai Pan National Park is part of the greater Makgadikgadi complex and covers an area of over 2 000 square km’s. The Baines’ Baobabs is a clump of seven huge baobab trees named after the nineteenth-century explorer, Thomas Baines, situated on an island overlooking the Kudiakam Pan. We overnight here next to the trees with the most beautiful sunset as our guest. The evening is spent around the fire under the brightest carpet of stars imaginable.

Day 11 - KASANE, BOTSWANA:

From the Nxai Pan area, we now drive in an easterly direction towards Nata. Our next stop is Kasane – the town close to the borders of four countries (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) and also where the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers collide.

Our drive takes us through concession areas where we can expect to see massive elephant bulls along the public road. On arrival in Kasane in the late afternoon, we check in at River View Lodge. Enjoy the views of the river from the swimming pool.

Dinner tonight is own expense.

Day 12 - VICTORIA FALLS:

Today we will visit the world-famous Victoria Falls. Upon arrival, we walk down to the Falls. En route we stop for a quick snack to eat (own expense). A walk in the Victoria Falls National Park is a highlight of the tour. We get up close to the power of the falls and view it from different angles.

We first view the falls from the side (we start at the David Livingstone statue), and then we walk around and face it from the front. The walk is a good three kilometres. We will take our time here. When we are finished (1 – 2 hours), we will walk across to the Lookout Café that is situated high above the Batoka Gorge. The restaurant overlooks the gorge and the bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia. We enjoy lunch (own expense) here before heading back to the town where we visit the wonderful Craft Market. Here you can do some shopping or feel free to just walk around and admire the skill of these craftsmen and women.

We will return to River View Lodge in Kasane in the afternoon.

Day 13 - KASANE, BOTSWANA:

Today we have a relaxed day at the lodge. After breakfast, you have the option to either relax around the pool at the lodge or you can do a game drive in the Chobe National Park. In the afternoon we will take a boat safari in the Chobe National Park.

Chobe National Park takes its name from the Chobe river. The Chobe river forms the northern boundary and protects about 11700 square km. Its vegetation varies from lush floodplains to the scorched Savuti marsh. This is classic big game country where herds of buffalo and elephant attain legendary proportions. These are matched by exceptionally large prides of lions.

What makes the northern part of Chobe unique is the fact that it lies next to the Chobe River for almost 60 km. This allows for excellent game viewing along the Chobe river drive. Animals need to come and drink water. Large raptors are nesting close to the Chobe river and there is an abundance of water birds and migrating birds.

Dinner tonight will be at the lodge. (own expense)

Day 14 - NATA, BOTSWANA:

Today we make our way to Elephant Sands.

Elephant Sands is a bush lodge & campsite in the north-eastern part of Botswana. We enjoy viewing the elephants at the natural waterhole right in front of the lodge. We watch these impressive creatures whilst they drink only a couple of meters away from us, a unique experience! There is plenty of other wildlife around as well on the unfenced 16000 ha private conservancy. The lack of fences allows all animals to roam freely.

You can look forward to seeing elephant, kudu, giraffe, wild dog, steenbok, buffalo, impala, leopard, ostrich, warthog, lion, jackal, mongoose, porcupine, zebra and more. And then there is an abundance of fascinating birdlife to be viewed whole year round around our waterhole and the birdbath.

In the afternoon you have the option to do an afternoon game drive.
